Ethan Ligon is Professor of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1994. Most of his research is about sharing: informal risk-sharing among households, allocation within the household, and the design of agricultural contracts. The work is usually theoretical and empirical at once. He has conducted experiments and worked with household data from many countries on five continents. His recent papers take up measurement, and in particular develop practical and flexible methods for estimating individual or household level marginal utilities. Another recent paper separates informal insurance from credit in settings where interest rates vary. He is a member of the Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics and is affiliated with the Center for Effective Global Action.
